A SERIOUS REMINDER -- MAKING THE SIGN OF THE CROSS

Sometimes the simplest of actions can have the most profound meaning. Such is the case with the SIGN OF THE CROSS, which Byzantine Catholics place upon themselves repeatedly while praying. Deep theological truths are expressed when we perform this sacred gesture.

The SIGN OF THE CROSS is made with the right hand. Our thumb, index finger and middle finger are placed together, proclaiming our BELIEF IN THE BLESSED TRINITY: God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Our remaining two fingers are put into the palm of our hand, indicating that when Jesus came down from heaven into the world, He had TWO DISTINCT NATURES -- HUMAN AND DIVINE.

As we make the SIGN OF THE CROSS we touch our foreheads, our chests and our shoulders. In the tradition of the Byzantine Rite, the right shoulder is touched before the left. As we do this, we are, in essence, confirming that we love the Lord with all of our MIND, our HEART, and our STRENGTH.

The Church teaches that there is great power in the SIGN OF THE CROSS. We are reminded, however, that it should ALWAYS be made with great care and reverence! Each time we repeat those precious words - IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, AND OF THE SON, AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - we must reaffirm our desire to live and labor for the glory of God.

Please make the SIGN OF THE CROSS with great devotion, awareness of what we are doing, with respect, for we are in contact with the Triune God!
