GARDEN OF OUR LADY OF THE WILLOW

Our Lady of the Willow

In 1996 Epiphany's pastor, Fr. Philip Scott, requested some parishioners to undertake the propagation and cultivation of pussy willows on church property to provide the parish with flowering willow branches for use on Flowery Sunday, also called Willow Sunday, and for sale to other parishes which possess neither land nor inclination to cultivate their own. A parcel of well-watered and sunny land was selected and trees were set out in the fall of the year. As of summer 1999 there are more than 30 trees under cultivation and another 15 - 20 will be set out in the fall. Three species of pussy willows are represented to provide a wider variety of color, form and blooming time. They are the American species, Salix discolor, the European species, Salix caprea, and the Japanese species, Salix chaenomeloides. In March 1999 the first willow cuttings were taken for sale to churches in Florida.

For more information about the ritual use of flowering willow branches in the Catholic and Orthodox churches of the Byzantine/Slavonic liturgical tradition, its Resurrectional significance, and the cultivation of willows, viewers of this Web page are invited to see The Resurrection and the Willow Web site.
