Byzantine Cross The Divine Liturgy

  • A Walk through the Divine LiturgyAG00111_.gif (1635 bytes)
This is a step by step look at the main aspects of the Liturgy, why we do the various things, and the meaning and symbolism behind the different rituals and customs.

Byzantine Cross Services of the Great Fast

  • Service of Forgiveness
This service is done on the Sunday before Lent, also known as Cheese-Fare Sunday in the Byzantine Churches.  The service is in preparation for lent.
  • Liturgy of the Presanctified
This is not a true mass because the communion is consecrated prior to the service; hence 'Presanctified'. It is celebrated on Wednesday's and Friday's of Great Lent.
  • Washing of Feet
Keeping with Jesus' tradition of washing feet, this service usually proceeds the Divine Liturgy on Holy Thursday.
  • Holy Thursday
The Divine Liturgy with Vespers for Holy and Great Thursday.
  • Good Friday
Vespers for Holy and Great Friday with Burial Procession.

Byzantine Cross  Holy Mysteries

  • Mystery of Holy Anointing
In many Byzantine Parishes, it is the custom to administer the sacrament of Holy Anointing on Great and Holy Wednesday.

Byzantine Cross Vespers and Matin Services

  • Resurrection Matins
The Matins and Liturgy used on Resurrection Sunday, to celebrate our Savior rising from the grave.
  • Vespers
    The Office of Great Vespers.
  • Small Compline
The Small Compline Service, also known as the little "After Supper."

Byzantine Cross Miscaleneous Services

  • Akathist Hymns
The akathist is one of the most ancient collection of prayers in the Byzantine Church. It is a prayer of veneration, thanksgiving and petition. Here we have an akathist to Jesus, Mary, and one to St. Michael the Archangel.
  • Moleben for Vocations
This is a service led by the Priest, to pray for vocations to the religious life.  It is currently being implemented in many Byzantine Parishes, because of the need for more priests, deacons, monks and nuns.
