History of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church
Our first celebration of the Sacrament of the Eucharist was on November 3, 1940, in a small wooden church that formerly belonged to the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh.
We have been served through the years by these spiritual shepherds: Gregory Moneta,
Roland Maruschak, O.F.M., John Pipik, Basil Pekar, John Kallok, Louis Sismis, Joseph
Borodach and currently by the Rev. Msgr. Edward V. Rosack, O.E.S.B.(e-mail: nika@cobweb.net).
Our new church with hall beneath, the rectory and detached bell tower were constructed
during the pastorate of Joseph Borodach and were dedicated by Bishop Nicholas T. Elko
on August 25, 1963.
During the pastorate of our present pastor, the School of Religion for the elementary
grades was changed to a two-week session in June. A choir was formed and the altar
boys’ sacristy was converted into a chapel for the daily celebration of the Eucharist. The
American Bridge Company (USX Corporation) parking lot across Park Road from the
church was purchased. A basement and ground-level extension was built onto the rear of
the church. A handicap-accessible ramp was installed, the bell tower was anchored more
firmly and repainted, a peaked roof was built on the rectory and the entire interior of the
church was repainted.
